Equipment and Tools

Within the context of our research activities, we utilise a number of modelling and simulation software programmes, as well as hardware and laboratory installations.

Modelling and simulation software

  • UMBERTO, SIMAPRO and openLCA for substance and energy flow management and life cycle assessment
  • MATLAB/Simulink and similar platforms for process modelling and optimisation
  • Open source software, GRASS GIS and R for for spatial data management and geostatistics
  • TRNSYS, EINSTEIN for the simulation of thermal processes and systems (e.g. buildings)
  • National Instruments LabVIEW for measurement and control automation

Hardware

  • Spatial data infrastructure (SDI)
  • On-site trials of photovoltaic solar panels: meteorological measuring devices, Keithley DAQ-system and Kepco source-meters, tested by the LabVIEW measuring software modified by our teams at the CRTE
  • Prototypes for wastewater treatment
  • Online surveillance equipment for monitoring, for example, water quality and energy generation and consumption

Laboratory installations

  • Laboratory for analysing water samples
  • Mechatronic laboratory

Our flagship projects

An investigation into the removal of pharmaceuticals from domestic wastewater using biofilm degradation processes
Indirect land use change effects in consequential Life Cycle Assessment of bioenergy
Building Integrated PV - Characterisation, performance assessment and Monitoring
